SOME SECRETS ARE KEPT TO SURVIVE.
A ramshackle cabin borders a forest in rural Alabama. The year is 1970. Louellen, thirteen, and her ten-year-old sister, Annabella, are learning the ways of the world far too early in life.
Their caretaker, Uncle Arnie—a man no one suspects of wrongdoing—treats the girls less like nieces and more like domestic servants, keeping them around to do the work he doesn’t want to do. With Arnie absent more often than not, the girls have learned to fend for themselves. But it’s the times when Arnie is home that Louellen dreads most. She has endured his unwanted attention since she was ten, keeping what happens inside the cabin to herself. When Arnie’s attention turns to Bella, however, the younger sister refuses to roll over and play dead. Her actions solve one problem—but create another that changes everything.
What happens next depends entirely on the sisters’ ingenuity, their loyalty to one another, and their ability to keep certain things secret.
